The ships name is reminiscent of the Emerald Coast of Sardinia, which is considered one of the most beautiful destinations in Italy.
The newest flagship of the Costa fleet is called Costa Smeralda. The name comes from a partnership agreement between Costa Crociere and the Costa Smeralda Consortium, which takes care of the tourist development, promotion and marketing of the famous Costa Smeralda in Sardinia.
Thanks to the use of four dual-fuel engines, both in port and on the open sea, the Costa Smeralda can be operated with LNG, the currently most environmentally friendly and lowest-emission fossil fuel.
